Lawn & Shrub Care Tips
If you are following the Florida Green Industries Best Management Practices and Marion County Fertilizer Ordinance 08-35, July is a great month to fertilize your lawn and shrubs. Remember when making your fertilizer application you should only apply one pound of nitrogen per 1000 sq. ft if using a slow release product and .7 pounds if using a readily available form of nitrogen (water soluble nitrogen). Both types of fertilizer should not exceed three pounds of nitrogen per year.

Crepe Myrtles are blooming and will keep blooming if you prune off the old blooms. Just prune off the spend blooms after they go to seed.

With the rainy season here, check your irrigation frequently after thunderstorms to make sure they are still correctly set. Lightning can often times surge systems and create problems with the controller.

Stay tuned for more information concerning the BLCCDD meeting coming up in September. We are planning a great event with contractor giveaways and plenty of useful information concerning conservation and the hydrology of Florida.

It is hot and dry. With the lack of rainfall residents need to be checking their irrigation and hand watering hot spots, preferably in the early morning hours or early evening. When hand watering, make sure your hose has an automatic shut off device.

Dry weather will stress grass and stressed grass brings on Chinch bugs. These insects are opportunistic; they are looking for grass that is overly succulent or stressed. Hand watering your lawn in times of stress may help. When treating Chinch bugs alternate your chemical class to avoid resistance to chemical treatment. The product "Arena" has worked well but should be alternated. This product can be found at John Deer by the Sullivan Cadillac Dealership. It is expensive but worth the price, maybe you can share the cost with a neighbor.

Community Wildlife
It is wonderful that we have all the pleasures of country living so close to the city. Many of us love it while others tolerate it. But, please do not encourage our wildlife friends to stay too long. We have a family of coyotes that are becoming too comfortable in the community and we are receiving reports that our kind hearted residents are feeding them. Please note that if people feed coyotes or if there is a food source associated with humans the coyotes will become less fearful of people and could become aggressive. So in order to keep the community safe and reduce nuisances and apprehensions caused by wildlife, it is VERY important that we condition the coyotes to fear people. People can help condition coyotes by doing the following:

  1. NEVER feed coyotes.
  2. Remove coyote food sources such as trash, fruit and pet food from the environment.
  3. Keep small pets inside from dusk to dawn or in safe enclosures.
  4. Never leave young children unattended in yards or parks.
  5. Harass coyotes with loud noises, clapping hands, yelling, throwing rocks at them and waving our arms to create fear
  6. Call the local department of Fish and Game or local law enforcement agency if coyotes attack humans, become too aggressive by approaching humans and by showing lack of fear of humans or if they attack small pets.

In an attempt to help our residents reduce their stress, here is a list of suggestions to protect your property from water damage before leaving for vacation or an extended leave.

  • Check your address and contact number on your utility account and in Customer Service to make sure you can be reached in case of an emergency. An email account is also helpful.
  • Contact local friends or neighbors, and provide them with relevant phone numbers and keys to your home in the event of an emergency. It would also be beneficial to ask them to check your property on a weekly basis while you are away. This includes checking your front door for any door tags we may hang.
  • Turn off the main house water valve. If you cannot locate the main valve, you may want to turn off the water valves at toilets, sinks, lavatories, ice maker and washing machine. This could save significant costs, if leaks occur inside your home.
  • Be sure to leave your irrigation system on and arrange for routine inspections. Doing so may help ensure your lawn is getting the necessary water and your system is running on the correct day and time.

May 12, 2011
Wind Mitigation Forms:
On Top of the World’s Customer Service is now offering to complete Wind Mitigation Inspection Forms to help our residents lower their homeowner’s insurance. For a $50 fee, we will have a State Certified Building Contractor or Licensed Home Inspector complete the “Uniform Mitigation Verification Form.” This is the form that insurance companies require to provide credits on your home.

This service is particularly valuable if you recently reroofed your house. New homeowners can also benefit. One resident in Candler Hills received over $300 off his annual premium after submitting the completed form to his insurance company. You may want to contact your agent to find out what discounts would be available to you.

If you have any questions or wish to schedule a wind mitigation, please contact the customer service office.

May 10, 2011
May is historically the driest month in Florida. Residents need to pay extra attention to their irrigation system to see that they are applying water properly and adequately to meet the needs of the grass. A general rule of thumb is to apply ½ - ¾ of an inch of water at each application. Check your irrigation system to make sure your heads are adjusted properly.

Irrigation: Irrigation operation is critical to the health of your grass and plants. Check your system monthly for leaking heads, broken pipes, proper coverage and proper function to ensure the system is operational. The irrigation system should be operating a 100% of the regularly scheduled run time this time of the year.

Plants: Take All Root Rot is active this time of year. It is typically triggered by high rainfall and stressed turf grass, so observe your lawn during the summer and early fall months when Florida receives the majority of its rainfall. Prolonged periods of rainfall are most conducive to this disease. Any stress placed on the turf grass will encourage or worsen the disease. Continue to monitor plants for insects. Applications of minor nutrients are permissible during this time.

Turf: Do not fertilize fungus areas. Chinch bugs are active. Chinch bugs have become resistant to every major chemical class. When treating chinch bugs, be sure to alternate your pesticide chemical class and/or mode of action to reduce pesticide resistance. Masked Chafer and Sugarcane grub control is typically applied this time of year. Applications of minor nutrients are permissible during this time.

Tropical Storm Watch: An announcement that tropical storm conditions (sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph) are possible within the specified coastal area within 48 hours.
