About the Red Hat Society
Since the summer of 2002 the organization known as the Red Hat Society have invaded the gates of OTOW with over 13 chapters. Growing in leaps and bounds, the Red Hatters, started by Queen Mother Sherry Sklow of the Divine Divas has snowballed into many other societies as the Razzle-Dazzle Red Dames of OTOW, Eight Diamonds in the Rough, the Niftee Nine, the Ocala Happy Hatters, the Crescent Ridge Red Hatters and the Red Dollies.
There are no rules with the Red Hatters, just fun. Originally formed by Sue Ellen Cooper, a wife-mother-artist from Fullerton, Ca., while visiting a friend, purchased a bright red fedora from a thrift shop. Weeks later, she happened to read Warning, a poem by Jenny Joseph which begins, When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple with a red hat. She gave a vintage red hat to her friend as a birthday gift. That friend in turn gave a hat to another friend and so became the birth of the Red Hat Society.
